DIVORCE instructions to solicitors hit a peak each January according to Theale-based family law specialist Tony Roe.

He said relationships, already under strain before Christmas, are often further undermined by the stresses of the season. But he admits he is used to the new year peak. He said: “Sadly, specialist solicitors get a lot of enquiries at this time of year. Historically, my firm has always offered tips to those faced with such problems”.

He suggests:

• Don’t assume all is lost. Speak to Relate before you speak to a lawyer, www.relate.org.uk.
• Focus on the children.
• Keep open channels of communication with your partner Use only solicitors who are members of Resolution.
• Ask a solicitor about fees over the phone before meeting Prepare for the meeting with notes - you could even take a friend.
• Review your finances.
• Don’t neglect your health.
